Career Day and the Shadow Program, Wednesday, April 16
Share your professional expertise with an HNA student or an entire classroom. Alums are needed for both the Shadow Program and Career Day. For the Shadow Program, seniors spend a portion of the day “shadowing” individuals in their workplaces. On the same day, at school, the rest of the HNA student body attends presentations on different careers. If you would welcome having a student in your office, or if you would like to make a presentation at HNA on Wednesday, April 16, please contact Christie Spielman at (206) 720-7804 or cspielman@holynames-sea.org. We invite you to make a connection with HNA students.

Wine Tasting in Woodinville, Sunday, April 20

We will work with the community program Rebuilding Together, assisting with home repair and clean-up services and improving the living conditions for a less-advantaged household. Submit your name to Betsy Steele ’70 at besteele@microsoft.com; you will be contacted with additional details.

Puppet Show, HNA Auditorium, Sunday, May 4, 1 p.m.

This hilarious musical version of the classic Norwegian story relates the billy goats’ quest for fresh green grass and their encounters with two trolls – one who is more helpful and friendlier than the other. The Thistle Theatre proudly brings together professional puppeteers, handcrafted puppets, artists and musicians to create unique puppet theatre productions for the entire family.  This production is suitable for children ages pre-K-5; performance time is 45 minutes.  Juice and cookies will be served following the puppet show. Under the Dome
Academics
Advanced Placement Program
HNA recently received notification of Advanced Placement Scholar Awards, based on examinations taken last May. Our students broke many records in their level of achievement:
  • One hundred twenty-three students earned 126 different awards.
  • Three of our students attained the highest level, National AP Scholar, for earning an average grade of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
  • Forty-six percent of our graduating Class of 2007 achieved some level of AP Scholar distinction, and 98% of the class graduated having taken at least one AP course, with the average being four courses.
  • Forty-five members of the Class of 2008 earned an AP Scholar designation prior to the beginning of their 12th-grade year.

Debaters Bring Home First National Honors
The debate team competed in Salt Lake City in December at the Alta High School Tournament, one of the largest tournaments in the West. Ninety-one teams from all across the country competed. HNA’s two debate teams did very well against the many nationally competitive teams in attendance. There were seven preliminary debates and a team needed a 5-2 record to advance into the single-elimination rounds.  This was the first time that a Holy Names team won a trophy at a national level tournament.

Cougar Corner
The past November’s State tournaments saw the best collaborative finish for a fall sports season in the history of Holy Names Academy. Cougar teams went on a whirlwind ride, winning races, games, matches, and meets—and bringing home State trophies: Cross Country, individual second; Soccer, third; Volleyball, fifth; Swimming, 13th. Congratulations to athletes, coaches, and Cougar fans for dedication, commitment, hard work, and a spectacular season!

Golf: Congratulations to the HNA golf team for winning the Metro Championship for the ninth time in the last 12 years. The Lady Cougars took their second consecutive Metro League crown, easily topping the competition in the two-day league championship at Jefferson Park golf course—44 strokes ahead of second place.

Cross Country: Holy Names finished seventh as a team in the District Championship meet. In the Metro League Championships, the Cougar runners placed fifth as a team. Chelsea Burns ’08 concluded her exceptional Cougar cross-country career by placing an impressive second at State.

Soccer: After eliminating Skyline in the KingCo/Metro 3A cross-over playoff for the third and last berth to State, the Cougars started their remarkable run. HNA beat both Capital and Lakeside to reach the semifinals, where they lost to Seattle Prep in a shoot-out. The Cougar team then captured third place with a 2–1 victory over perennial powerhouse West Valley (Yakima) for the best finish by an HNA team since the 1999 State championship.

Volleyball:
Holy Names earned one of only four local berths to the State tournament by placing third at the Sea-King District 2 tournament, then went on to accomplish something no HNA volleyball team had done before. This 2007 team took home a State trophy with a fifth-place finish, defeating Enumclaw, Auburn Mountainview, and Mt. Si at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

Swimming: The HNA swim team made another strong showing in the State AAA meet, placing 13th, the highest finish by a Metro League team. The District and State meets preceded the regular Metro league season.

Crew: In their final two regattas, the HNA rowers left nothing on the water, with firsts, seconds, and thirds: Green Lake Frostbite Regatta: JV8+: 1st Place. W Jr Novice 8+: 2nd Place. W Open Novice 4+: 2nd Place. W JV 4+: 3rd Place. W Open Novice 8+: 4th Place. W 3V 8+: 3rd Place. Varsity Head of the Lake Regatta: W Varsity 4+:1st Place. W Varsity 8+: 7th (out of 12 boats).

Basketball: The Cougar basketball teams worked hard as they started the season; at the holiday break, their records were: Varsity 3-5, JV undefeated at 8-0, JVC 4-3.

Swimming: The defending Metro League champions have competed in three league meets this season, with victories over Eastside Catholic, Nathan Hale, and Seattle Prep. Cougar swimmers, along with the Irish boys from O’Dea, are looking for their fifth consecutive Metro championship, which would give them eight wins in the past nine years.

HNA Honors Alumnae
Dorothy McBurney Fouty Volunteer of the Year: A highlight of Deck the Dome each year is the presentation of our Dorothy McBurney Fouty Volunteer of the Year. This award is given to an individual who has repeatedly demonstrated extraordinary support for the mission of our school. Caryn Geraghty Jorgensen ’89 was recognized for her inspiring dedication and commitment. Caryn has served our school as a member of the Board of Trustees for the past four years and prior to that she served on our Alumnae Board for five years. She has worked on numerous committees through both boards, and currently chairs our Development Committee. She is a former chair of our Annual Giving Steering Committee, a veteran Phonathon volunteer, and a Leadership Solicitor.

Young Alumna Community Service Award: A
nother significant award given at this time of year is our Young Alumna Community Service Award. Bevin Peters ’05 was recognized at our Young Alumnae Reception on December 19 for her commitment to serving others. Bevin is currently a junior at Yale University, studying biomedical engineering. This past summer, she received a Thomas C. Barry Travel Fellowship that promotes work abroad in developing countries. Bevin, who speaks Kiswahili, used her grant to volunteer with New Life International in Nakuru, Kenya. While in Kenya, she served at a preschool where many of the children had lost a parent due to the AIDS epidemic, and she also volunteered at a local hospital. Since her return, she continues to work to raise funds for the children.
